Bella Ramsey, who stars as Ellie on The Last of Us HBO series, has responded to fans’ unfounded criticism of her casting.

The Last of Us, based on the acclaimed video game, follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Ramsey) on a cross-country journey across America in the midst of a deadly and monstrous fungal pandemic.

In the original game, Joel and Ellie were respectively voiced by Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, who both have small roles in the upcoming show.

When Ramseys casting was first announced, it sparked an outpouring of vocal, often nasty criticism from fans who didn’t believe she was right for the role. They were wrong.

Bella Ramsey responds to criticism of The Last of Us

From the first episode of The Last of Us, Bella Ramsey is perfect as Ellie. For the young star, best known for playing Lyanna Mormont on Game of Thrones, the backlash was an unprecedented experience.

It’s the first time I’ve had a negative reaction to something,” the 19-year-old told The New York Times.

The premise of this review could be boiled down to one thing: Ramsey doesn’t look exactly like Ellie in the game, with some fans thinking other actresses would be more appropriate (Kaitlyn Dever was the most common name).

However, these claims are purely superficial and completely ignore Ramsey’s acting talent. Nevertheless, while finding it amusing at first, the comments started to reach her.

There would be times when I would find it funny. Then I’d come to the end of a 10-minute scrolling session, put my phone down, and realize: maybe that was a bad idea, she says.

It’s only recently that I’ve accepted that I’m Ellie, and I can do it, and I’m a good actor. But it will last a few weeks, and then I’ll think I’m terrible again. It’s just the process.

Johnson praised Ramsey at The Last of Us premiere, saying: I was a little surprised, because when I saw her, I was like, Shes Ellie, she’s got the essence of Ellie.

I love her as an actress anyway, and she’s so perfect for the role.
