A 24-year-old man will appear in court after Premier League footballer Ivan Toney was the victim of racist abuse on social media.
Police launched an investigation in October after the England and Brentford striker shared an image of an abusive message he received online on his Twitter account.
The post, which officers are treating as a hate crime, was attributed to a suspect living in the North Shields area of North Tyneside.
Northumbria Police, in conjunction with the Metropolitan Force, found a suspect and he was questioned on bail.
Northumbria Police say the man has been asked to appear before magistrates in Newcastle on January 25, where he will face formal charges of sending a message that is grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or threatening nature.
Superintendent Scott Cowie, Hate Crimes Officer for Northumbria Police, said: There is absolutely no place for discrimination of any kind in society, whether within our communities or online. .
Hate crimes in any form are completely unacceptable and as a force we are committed to taking appropriate action against anyone suspected of spreading this type of abuse.
We would like to thank the victim for their support and cooperation throughout this case, as well as our colleagues at the Metropolitan Police who assisted in our investigations.
Anyone who is the victim of online abuse or believes they have been the victim of a hate crime is encouraged to always report it, so that it can be fully investigated.
We also ask members of the public who see, read or hear offensive, racist or homophobic language in dating or online to contact us.
