Sydney chef Fatimah Omran slammed for using racist word for Cheer cheese

A Sydney chef has defended his use of a ‘racist’ word when referring to a popular brand of cheese in a viral clip.

Culinary teacher Fatimah Omran shared a recipe on her TikTok account earlier this week that called for the use of tasty cheese Cheer, formerly marketed as Coon.

This cheese brand underwent a famous name change in July 2021 amid concerns about racism, as the old name was widely seen as an offensive racial slur.

Instead of using the new name, Cheer, Fatimah told her followers to use “Coon cheese” in the recipe, which saw her inundated with angry messages.

The 42-year-old says she never meant to use the word in an offensive way, would never be racist and was simply referring to the type of cheese she was using.

“I always post my recipes online, and that day I was making a three cheese sandwich for my daughter,” Fatimah told news.com.au.

“I thought it was important to name the cheese so my audience would use the correct one.

“I never stopped calling him by his original name, and I felt like a fake if I had to call him by his new name, Cheer.

“I was really surprised that instead of comments applauding my delicious creation, people focused on my voiceover and what I call cheese.

“I have never been racist. My Lebanese background would never allow me to be racist because I have experienced racism first hand.

“I believe we are all equal and my reference in the video was clearly to a cheese. Not a person. You can’t be racist towards cheese.

Fatimah said her inbox was flooded with angry messages from people, many of whom used racial slurs against her because of her ethnic and religious background.

The mum-of-three issued a public apology on her Instagram after the backlash for any offense caused by her video.

“I posted a public apology on my Instagram platform and the support I received was overwhelming and beautiful,” she said.

“My inboxes were flooded with people also saying they refused to give the cheese its new name and that they knew my intentions were not sinister.

“I also received many private messages calling me ‘Curry muncher’ and other derogatory terms.

“You cannot fight racism with racism. It’s just hypocrisy.

“I would never discriminate against anyone because of their ethnicity or background. My religion preaches against that.

Fatimah said she might not naturally call the cheese by its new name Cheer, but would be more mindful of using the old name in public places.

“To be honest, I can’t promise that I’ll instantly start calling him Cheer,” she said.

“But I will certainly be mindful when I publicly speak or write the other word.

“I wish people wouldn’t assume the worst.

“There were a lot of people who defended me on other public platforms saying they were sure I didn’t mean it on purpose and it was the plain truth.

“I grew up eating this brand of cheese with the old name.

“Even now, when I go shopping with my daughter and tell her to buy me the Coon brand cheese, she constantly corrects me.

“But I tell him that I will always call him that.

“I find it difficult to adapt to new names, in addition to more than 40 years that I have used it.

“It’s hard to change a habit.”

Stephen Hagan, the Indigenous activist who was behind the campaign that led to the cheese being renamed, told news.com.au he was “relieved” the brand was undergoing the change.

“I’m happy with the name change; I’m not worried about the new name, but I wish they’d changed the packaging as well,” he said.

“If you look quickly at the packaging, you’d think it was Coon cheese again.”

Speaking to Channel 7’s Sunrise, Lino A Saputo, Chairman and CEO of Saputo Inc, said the name change was a “difficult” decision, as it was such a well-known brand in Australia. .

“Although we’ve only owned it since 2015, it was important for us to understand that this name didn’t appeal to other consumers,” he said.

“You want to have a totally inclusive culture, where everyone feels accepted, where everyone feels respected.

“We thought it was okay to change your name.”
