The list of the 11 richest cities in Texas…El Paso didn’t make it…includes at least one with a racist past. Sadly, not uncommon in American history.
I recently came across a list of the 11 richest cities in Texas. While they all absolutely deserve to be on the list and have certainly earned their spots, we haven’t always been exactly welcoming to ALL Texans.
An attitude that cities (rich and poor) across America have had to confront and fight.
Number one is Highland Park, a town roughly surrounded by Dallas. It’s a neighborhood that I know quite well because I lived right next to it. I knew people who lived there, so I knew the place pretty well. .

It was interesting, shall we say, living in an average Dallas neighborhood right next to a wall that partially enclosed the rich and famous. While it was its own city, with its own “atmosphere”, I never noticed any real prejudices there. Dallas has a high concentration of blacks so, if anything, I was the minority.
Security was taken very seriously at Highland Park and although they were very vigilant there was nothing sinister about the way they treated people. This wasn’t always the case, as Highland Park has a dark past and was once known as “Sundown Town”.

They were places where people who weren’t white had better finish their things and leave when the sun went down. Non-whites caught in these places after dark usually didn’t fare very well, as sunset “curfews” were usually enforced by both cops and vigilantes.
Things were different back then, but those ignorant attitudes had changed so much…for the better…by the time I lived nearby. Curiously, despite decades of change and more enlightened views, Highland Park had no black residents until 2003.
