Zanu-PF secretary for youth affairs, Tinomuda Machakaire, has dramatically dropped his criticism of Zimdancehall kingpin Wallace Chirumiko, better known as Winky D, urging fellow critics ‘not to fight the musician “.
Winky D has faced criticism from Zanu-PF supporters and leaders since the release of her latest album, Eureka Eureka.
Machakaire initially accused Winky D of doubling down on politics.
In a video that recently went viral on social media, Machakaire also slurred on Winky D, claiming his music causes “unnecessary chaos”, drawing widespread criticism.
In a move of redemption, Machakaire, posting on his social media accounts, called for toning down criticism against Winky D.
“I watched with growing concern the video circulating on social media.
“It’s quite unfortunate that the video hasn’t been shared in its entirety.
“However, all I’m saying is don’t fight the artists (Winky D).
“Let us respect their art and respect their opinions as long as it is within their constitutional rights.
“President ED Mnangagwa says no to violence, yes to peace. The world is built by its people and we are its people,” said Tino Machakaire.
The social commentary-heavy album drew Zanu-PF loyalists who lambasted Winky D on social media with a shadowy group, the party’s Economic Empowerment Group (EEG), calling for his music to be censored. .
In songs like Ibotso and Dzimbadzemabwe, Winky D spoke out against corruption and challenged the status quo that robbed young people of opportunities to thrive, which angered Zanu-PF supporters.
“I know most young people are unemployed and that is a bone of contention with most of our young people.
“In Harare alone, for example, the roads in most of our residential areas have deteriorated, the city of Harare is failing to provide clean and safe water, traffic lights are not working, stadiums are down, the inability to develop workspaces, for example Coca Cola.
“We have identified the issues and we need solutions to those issues, that’s why I say, come on, let’s talk about it.
“I know we have a lot of brilliant minds in our country and if we put our heads together we can come up with creative and innovative solutions to our problems.
“The moment we start to fight it distracts us from our purpose and instead of moving forward we are stuck fighting where we could expend that energy and creativity on resolving our grievances. is all I say,” Machakaire said.
Amid a barrage of criticism, Winky D remained calm, reducing critics like Fantan to naysayers, preferring his artistic prowess to express his mastery.
Declining disc jockey Arnold Kamudyariwa, known as Fantan in musical circles, has pulled daggers at Winky D, accusing him of using young musicians he has collaborated with.
In a post on her social media pages, Winky D turned a blind eye to her critics, thanking her fellow musicians for being featured on the 16-track album.
“We will never take for granted the diligent musical efforts of all the artists that were featured on the album. We indeed learned a lot from each other’s vibes. Sincere appreciation is due to the instrumentalists, producers and engineers on the album who have continued to deliver their work culture. Their care and dedication has been such a blessing,” said Winky D.
