Who is to blame for Fight Club Box Office Flop? Norton has a theory

[ad_1]

Fight Club is now considered a classic. Many people still quote him and he has earned a place in the history of cinema.

But in 1999 it sparked controversy, received polarized critical responses, and failed to live up to box office expectations, only finding commercial success later, with its home video release.

Edward Norton, who played the narrator in Fight Club, has his own opinion as to why the film’s initial poor performance. He feels that those who promoted the film felt insulted by the film and therefore did not do their best.

As he said during his appearance on PeopleTV’s Couch Surfing:

“I think there was a reluctance on the part of some of the people who were actually marketing it, to accept the idea that it was funny, and honestly I think they felt accused by that.”

Well, the assumption that some people at the studio felt the movie called them might be justified.

“I think if you felt more like the guy who plays my boss in the movie, then you tended to dislike the movie,” Norton added.

Norton even admitted that the problems Fight Club had in its early days, both in terms of lackluster financial returns and in terms of critical response as the film received no awards, were felt by the cast and crew. .

“It was an interesting experience because we all loved it and we were very confident. We were a bit stung.”

As he evidently explained, “You can never completely detach your ego from the way it behaves when it first opens up.”

But of course, ultimately Norton, starring Brad Pitt, Helena Bonham Carter and director David Fincher was vindicated, because not only did Fight Club generate strong revenue from DVD sales, it became one of the most discussed of the 1990s, if not the most talked about film.

Not only were those at the studio who felt “indicted by” re-indicted by its eventual commercial success, but film critics were also shamed through their disdain for a film that proved so important on the cultural plan.
