The High Court (HC) on Sunday ordered relevant authorities to look into alleged properties of 459 Bangladeshi nationals in Dubai.

A HC bench consisting of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat requested the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to submit a report within one month after investigation.

The court also asked the economic daily “Banik Barta” to provide proof of its report as well.

In addition, a decision was issued by the court asking the authorities concerned to explain their inactivity in taking action following the allegations.

A writ petition was filed with HC on Thursday seeking its direction to investigate the properties of 459 Bangladeshis in Dubai. Lawyer Subir Nandi filed the petition attaching a report in this regard published by “Banik Barta”.

According to the report, a huge sum of money has been transferred to Dubai from different parts of the globe, including Bangladesh, openly and secretly.

Based on a report by the US-based Center for Advanced Defense Studies, the EU Tax Observatory said that 459 Bangladeshis bought properties in Dubai hiding the information in their own country and the number of properties was 972 in 2020.

According to the report, Bangladeshis bought properties worth around $1 billion during this period and Bangladeshis were the top buyers in Dubai’s property sector.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is now trying in any way to stimulate foreign investment. For this, it offers various facilities to wealthy foreigners to buy properties.

Experts believe that huge sums of money are transferred due to the lack of effective and strong measures to stop money laundering, he said.
