Raju Srivastava’s daughter Antara has decided to talk about her father in FIRST and EXCLUSIVE VIDEO with ETimes. The young woman spoke at length, recalling her father’s last moments and her last interaction with him. And of course all about his shows and his flair for fun and comedy too. She thought it was a confusion when her mother called her on August 10, 2022 with the shocking news that her father had suffered a heart attack. Antara felt that it might be his uncle, Raju’s brother whose name is Kaju, who has already been admitted to the hospital. This is a very EMOTIONAL INTERVIEW and we urge you to see it on the video embedded below:
Here are excerpts from the conversation: What are your earliest childhood memories of your father? He liked to take us to many places – restaurants, theaters. He would make sure we matched a movie every week. I remember I was 9 years old and he asked me to go to a bank alone. The bank was a bit far but he gave me directions. He wanted us to be aware and conscious of everything. Also, I remember that since childhood he used to write a diary in which he listed everything he had to do during the day. And he would make sure to complete the full list every day. I wish I could do that. I tried but couldn’t. He always told us to express our opinion and not be afraid.
He had his fair share of struggles before succeeding, and I think he instilled in me and my brother all the values that you have to adhere to if you want to be successful.
He wanted us to get home on time. He never wanted us to be kids who would spend money to party. He kept us in touch with reality; we don’t live in a limited world of clubbers where you don’t know what’s really going on in the world.
Was he a strict dad when it came to grades and grades in your studies, or for that matter your brother’s?
No, he never pressured us on grades. He never wanted us to study too hard. He always said that there were too many other challenges in life that we should prepare for. But that doesn’t mean that my brother (Ayushman) and I didn’t devote time to studies. We studied; our mother always made sure we did.
Which performance from him would you call the best? This is the most difficult question. I think what appealed to me about him was that his comedy was relatable. And yes, his ‘Sholay’ article was outstanding. One last thing, his style of impersonating objects was remarkable – and I think a lot of comedians don’t have that in them.
Was he a gym person? Did he do too much training? Yes, he would try to stick to his gym routine no matter what. He was very aware of his physical form. He would go to the gym at least every other day. When he was outside, he looked for a gym here and there, even on the road watching from his car and drove there. He was a major motivator for members of our family who didn’t exercise.
Whatever happened to him, it was just incidental that it happened while he was working out at the gym. He had a health problem. We shouldn’t blame the gym.
I’m sorry to ask you this, but could you tell us when was the last time you spoke to your father…
Life never tells you it will be the last time. He had been out of town for 10 days. A day after my birthday, he shot for ‘Laughter Champion’. We celebrated my birthday and he shared the kind of jokes he made there. A few days later he left for the outstation. He often toured.
Where were you exactly when the tragedy happened? My mother, my brother and I were in Mumbai. I was heading for work. I had a meeting at 12 p.m. While I was on my way, I received a call from my mother.
Had he reduced the frequency of his gym after his heart disease? Yes, the number of days and the time spent, both.
In fact, I thought my chachu had a heart attack on August 10, 2022 when my mom called me with this information. I felt there was confusion.
Why? My chachu’s name is Kaju and in fact he was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi (due to fluid buildup in his brain) when my dad had a heart attack. In fact, my dad had made some of his homestay arrangements as well. In fact, my chachu had to be operated on the same day. And my dad was shuttling between the hospital and taking care of him – and I thought the news of my dad’s heart attack was just a rumor.
But my mom told me she too thought it was a rumor and had already clarified it, and was told he passed out while on the treadmill.
We immediately booked our tickets to Delhi and took the first available flight. Chachu was then released on August 14.
Had he felt any discomfort before this unfortunate day?
There was a slight discomfort but nothing significant. We avoid such things and now we have learned that we must act in time.
What do you do in life?
I attended quite a few film projects, such as “Vodka Diaries”, where I was assistant producer. We made a short film with Kalki Koelchin, then another with Shreyas Talpade. Currently, I am working on a webcast. Apart from that, I assisted JP Dutta on ‘Paltan’.
My brother is a sitar player, learning the instrument from Pandit Niladri Kumar. He performs with the groups of Kailash Kher.
So you want to become a director or producer in Bollywood?
Yes. Can I say something more?
Safe…
I have to thank the Daddy fans who came out to support us in our hour of crisis. They came from all parts of the country.
I would like to thank our PM, Narendra Modi ji. He was in touch with my mum immediately since dad collapsed and stayed in touch until the last day. A lot of things have calmed down for us as a result. I also thank UP CM Yogi Adityanath ji. We were very well taken care of. Shri Brajesh Pathak ji and Keshav Prasad Maurya ji, Piyush Goel ji, Rajnath Singh ji and Dr Harsh Vardhan supported us – and thanks to them too. I don’t take these names because of my father’s political affiliations. He was loved by many people from many parties. Arvind Kejriwal wrote us a letter. Laaloo Prasad Yadav is a big fan of my dad.
And I must tell you that there is a man who inquired about my father’s health every day when he was hospitalized. And this is Amitabh Bachchan. It is a very big thing. My father idolized him and he became what he was because of Mr. Bachchan. All this gave us a lot of strength. Kapil Sharma paid tribute to my father on his show and I am very grateful to him. Johny Lever called 4 times a day and he prayed a lot for my father. TVF’s Shreyansh Pandey and Arunabh Kumar hosted a screening of my dad’s latest TVF shoot. Ironically, he was talking about life and death in there. It was a very moving moment. There were also other industry names and the list is too long. The mayor of Lucknow, Sanyukta Bhatia, named a crossroads with my father’s name. A garden in Kanpur bears his name in his memory. We have lost a national treasure… (crosses her hands). Ayushman and I think we are lucky and it is a blessing that we were born from him.
