Hyderabad: Stating that India has become the world capital of the poor, IT and Industry Minister KT Rama Rao said few political parties, due to lack of awareness and commitment to the well-being of the poor, criticized initiatives and programs aimed at the development of low-income groups.

People, who had no knowledge of the country’s socio-economic conditions, described social welfare programs and programs for the poor as giveaways, he said.

“Whether it’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi or any other leader, anyone who speaks against free support or incentives for the poor is wrong,” Rama Rao said during an NRI “Meet & Greet” program in Zurich.

The minister, in Switzerland to attend the World Economic Forum from Tuesday, addressed NRIs from Switzerland, the UK, Denmark, Germany, Norway and other countries during the program hosted by the Indian Diaspora.

The Telangana government had built mega projects and was implementing several social welfare programs to benefit all sections of society. All these projects were developed as assets for future generations, but unfortunately, it was called debts by a few sections, he said.

“Building power plants and megaprojects to expand free water and electricity supply for people’s well-being is an exercise in futility or an investment to ensure a safe and bright future? He asked.

The BJP-led Union government had incurred debts worth Rs.100 lakh crore. Can the Union Government or Prime Minister list a major achievement or welfare program for the poor, he asked.

The Telangana government with its commitment to the welfare of all sections had undertaken many programs and there was much more to be done and development was an ongoing process, he said and urged the NRI community to support Telangana government programs.

“More investment in Telangana will generate more jobs. I call on the NRIs to promote the programs and policies of the Telangana government at their level and help the government secure more investments,” said Rama Rao.
