Former Formula 1 driver Romain Grosjean has responded to criticism from Max Verstappens of the virtual 24 Hours of Le Mans event, which was marred by technical issues.
The line race took place last weekend, with Max Verstappen and the Redline team in attendance.
However, the race was forced to be red-flagged twice due to technical issues attributed to a security breach.
Connection issues saw the two-time F1 champion sent off for a short time, dropping him to 17th after holding the lead at the start.
After another connection issue, Verstappen quit the race and called it a clown show.
Taking to Twitter, Grosjean said in response to criticism from the event: What about when you have an engine or mechanical failure in real life, isn’t that the same thing?
In a separate post, Grosjean said: Sim racing is super competitive and seeing one of the biggest races in the world take place on [a] sim is awesome. Yes, a few scraps to improve, but isn’t it like everywhere else?
Verstappens’ comments were further criticized by commentator Ben Constanduros, who also took to social media to express his disappointment with the Dutchman’s comments.
If it’s a clown show, that makes me and my devoted friends clowns.
Usually after a 24 hour race I’m tired, but today was an ugly and exhausting display of the toxic side of Sim Racing and social media, he said. I am proud of what Le Mans Virtual Team has achieved.
Both today and the incredible achievements of the first 2 events. (2022 ran without server issues, remember.)
Yes, it didn’t work out for Max today, he was unlucky to be disconnected like a few other riders. The others continued, one of which won the GTE. It’s racing.
But calling out other humans so strongly and feeding the community with negativity while in such an influential position was unwise and only fuels toxicity in the community, which only hurts the world of Sim Racing as [a] together.
