Rohit Sharma finished 50 innings without a tonRohit’s final international century came in September 2021Rohit hasn’t hit the triple digit mark in ODI cricket since January 2020After his 42 run shot in the third and final ODI of the series of three games between India and Sri Lanka at the Greenfield stadium in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday January 15, India captain Rohit Sharma took an unwanted step by going 50 innings without a ton of international cricket. Rohit’s long drought has compounded India’s problems at the top of the order in all formats and he is certainly a huge concern ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup. 2011 World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir, criticized the India captain for his century of drought and said the fans and media should be as tough on him as they were on former skipper Kohli during his barren run.
I think we should talk to him in the same space as when Virat didn’t get a 100 for the last three and a half years. So we should be equally tough on Rohit Sharma because 50 innings of international cricket is a lot, Gambhir told Star Sports.
The former India striker explained that players like Virat and Rohit are hugely important to India’s hopes of winning the 2023 World Cup and the team needs its skipper back to their century-old form. In the 2019 World Cup, Rohit put on a sensational tournament and he collected a record five tons in the tournament.
It’s not that you haven’t gotten a 100 in one or two sets, and that’s one thing Rohit’s game lacked in the last World Cup. He used to get those big 100s, this time he looks good, he hits the ball well but he has to convert. One thing that stood out for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, and Virat got him back, Rohit Sharma needs to get him back at least before the World Cup because those two guys will be extremely important if India are to go all the way and win the World Cup, added Gambhir.
Rohit’s last century in international cricket came in September 2021 against England in India’s momentous victory in the Oval Test. The Indian captain’s last tally in ODI cricket came in January 2020 against Australia.
