Arestovych has been the subject of a torrent of criticism after he suggested that Ukrainian air defenses shot down the Russian Kh-22 cruise missile, causing an apartment complex in Dnipro to fall, killing 30 civilians. The Ukrainian Air Force later denied this claim, saying that this particular type of anti-ship missile remains beyond the reach of Ukrainian anti-aircraft systems.

Honcharenko said he thought Zelesnkyys’ office should officially deny he had any connection to Arestovitch’s military imagination.

MEPs also appealed to Ukraine’s SBU security service, over Arestovitch’s speculation about the role Ukrainian air defense might have played in the destruction of the Dnipro residential skyscraper, to check whether these are labeled as treason,” Honcharenko wrote.

Russian propaganda portrayed Arestovitch’s statement as an official Ukrainian position, as if acknowledging responsibility for civilian deaths.
