The upcoming Atomic Heart looks like a Soviet version of the Bioshock concept, in which we play as a KGB agent in an alternate future. But developer Mundfish is Russian, which made many people uncomfortable given the many despicable war crimes the country is committing against its neighbor Ukraine.
Many people therefore asked Mundfish about the funding, whether Russian censorship laws were involved in the game, and whether the Russian government had sponsored the project along with other war-promoting parties. This prompted the studio to share a comment on social media:
Unfortunately this didn’t really make things any better as they don’t even mention what they are talking about. Do they support Russian aggression or not? They followed up the tweet by explaining that they “don’t comment on politics or religion”, although they did make a play about a KGB agent working for a future Soviet country, which has close ties to communism.
Finally, they also posted a tweet that makes it seem like Mundfish considers people “spammers” if they ask what their stance is on Russia’s war and where they’re getting funding from – even though it’s is a reasonable question because many people are looking forward to the game, but do not want to support Russia or do propaganda.
One of the many people who complained about these rather ambiguous tweets is Remedy Entertainment developer Sergey Mohov. He writes:
It’s a fair question to ask, can you be neutral about the war on Ukraine and the crimes against its civilians, or does being neutral just help Russia? Does potentially helping Russia change your perception of Atomic Heart?
