The mother of a serial rapist who worked in the Metropolitan Police for more than two decades has said she raised concerns about the serious allegations made against him when he was a teenager.
Jean Carrick described her son as normal, adding that he did quite well in school and had many girlfriends in his youth.
But their relationship broke down after an allegation was made about him, although it didn’t go into the details of what he was accused of.
David Carrick pleaded guilty to 49 offences, including 24 counts of rape, against 12 women between 2003 and 2020

After that he changed, Ms Carrick told the Guardian. He kind of kept himself to himself and away from the family.
And that’s when I had my other two children. I didn’t know this until recently, but my other son told me: He’s a horrible man. He was kicking me behind my legs.
Mrs Carrick said her son used to bring girlfriends home when they lived in Durrington, but there were so many of them that in the end I didn’t bother to ask about them.
The 48-year-old was sacked by the Metropolitan Police at a misconduct hearing after he admitted to 49 charges on Monday, totaling 71 sexual offenses with 24 rapes, against 12 women between 2003 and 2020 – all committed during of his Met career.
He began his campaign of abuse before joining, with Scotland Yard investigating him in 2000 for allegedly harassing and robbing a former partner, but then let him join the force a year later. He was only suspended after being arrested following a second rape complaint in October 2021.
Carricks’ mother said he was growing normally

Ms Carrick said her son cut off all contact with her around 15 years ago.
When they last met, Carrick took her to lunch but quickly grew upset that her stepbrother was giving her heartbreak over the phone, she explained.
He picked up the phone and started shouting Im Mr Plod. I’m a police officer, so don’t fuck me, before you run out of the restaurant and never be seen by the family again, she told the Guardian.
I just don’t know why he did it, she added. Now he has lost everything. He’s going to lose the Met Police a lot, everything.
The Met’s assistant police commissioner described Carricks’ crimes as sickening and horrific

Met Assistant Commissioner Louisa Rolfe rated the harm caused by Carrick’s misconduct as extremely high and called his crimes horrific and sickening.
She said the reaction to her crimes shows how her conduct has seriously undermined trust in the police.
The public in Greater London expect police officers to uphold the law and protect women from violence. PC Carrick did the opposite, she says.
Ms Rolfe said the case had caused public harm, particularly to women and girls who may be less likely to come forward and report that they have been victims of criminal offences.
Rishi Sunak opened Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting by telling ministers that everyone would have been appalled by the crimes of David Carrick.
According to a reading from the meeting, the prime minister said the case undermines public trust in the police, which is essential for them to do their jobs.”
The Prime Minister said people like Carrick should never have been police officers and that we need to see real change quickly.
