PADUCAH The Paducah City Commission meets Tuesday afternoon for a hearing regarding an allegation of misconduct against Commissioner David Guess. The allegation stems from racially charged text messages that Guess sent to a city employee on Election Day about a candidate for the city commission.
On November 8, Guess sent a text about the campaign signs of then-commission candidate Dujuan Thomas, who was fired by a city employee for being placed illegally.
Guess said in a text, “You have dujan under control.” The city worker replied, “He’s mad at you lol.” Guess replied, “Whitey holding a black man.” I didn’t say anything during this entire election or a day in my life. The city employee replied, “No comment lol. “
City leaders briefed the public on the messages at a special meeting called on December 7. At another meeting on December 15, the other Guess commissioners asked him to resign a request which he refused and issued a formal charge of misconduct against him. In an order signed Dec. 21, Paducah Mayor George Bray announced that a full public hearing into the matter would be held at 4 p.m. Jan. 17 in the Commission Chambers of Paducah City Hall.
Witnesses for and against Guess are expected to speak at the hearing, and Guess will be represented by counsel. Thereafter, the Paducah City Commission will vote on whether to remove Guess from the local governing body. For Guess to be deleted, the committee must vote unanimously. If that happens, Guess can appeal the decision to a circuit court.
Local 6 plans to stream the hearing live here and on our Facebook fan page.
