MP for Asawase Constituency in Ashanti Region, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak said he had petitioned the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the police over the allegations made by the president of his party’s constituency.
The President, Faisal Dauda, at a press conference recently, alleged that the MP was planning to assassinate him.
He further alleged that Alhaji Mubarak, the Chief Minority Whip was conspiring with the ruling New Patriotic Party administration to cause the NDC to lose the constituency in the 2024 elections.
However, Alhaji Mubarak denied the allegations and said he had asked the party hierarchy and the police to investigate the allegations.
He spoke out on the issue when he presented financial support of around GH¢300,000 to 110 needy students in his constituency to pursue various courses at tertiary level.
Alhaji Muntaka said he believed a recent visit by some members of the national executive to Asawase would have fostered unity among the party base in the region.
Some political geeks had expressed concern over recent developments in the constituency, a stronghold of the opposition NDC.
There was near turmoil at the constituency conference last year to elect the executives when the MP tried to ensure that the former executives did not oppose, a decision flatly rejected by the delegates and members.
Alhaji Muntaka first entered Parliament on the NDC list in 2005 when he won a by-election, replacing the late Dr Gibril Adamu Mohammed.
He then retained his seat in several general elections.
He also served as Minister for Youth and Sports under the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
However, he resigned from the government following President Mills’ acceptance of the findings of a commission of inquiry.
In January 2021, he caused controversy when he allegedly said a Supreme Court justice offered an inducement to a female NDC MP in a bid to persuade her to vote for Professor Mike Oquaye in the election of the Speaker of Parliament. .
He was widely condemned by lawyers and asked to give evidence, but later apologised.
