Dani Alves appeared in custody at the police station in Les Corts, Catalonia, on Friday over allegations that he sexually assaulted a woman at a nightclub in Barcelona towards the end of 2022.
The Brazil international is now due to be questioned by a judge according to a spokesman for Catalan regional police Mossos d’Esquadra.
Alves, 39, currently plays for Pumas UNAM after a storied career that has included two stints with Barca, as well as stints at Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Sevilla.
Police say Catalan authorities received a complaint about Alves on January 2 from a woman who claimed he behaved inappropriately and touched her at popular Barcelona nightclub Sutton on the night of January 30. December 31st.
“I was there, in that place, with more people having fun,” Alves told Antena 3 earlier this month. “Everyone knows I like to dance. Having a good time but not invading other people’s space.”
Alves, who was on vacation after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, denied any wrongdoing and claimed he had “never seen” his accuser before.
Earlier this month, a Barcelona court confirmed it had opened an investigation into “an alleged crime of sexual assault” which was the “result of a complaint lodged by a woman against a footballer”.
Model Joana Sanz publicly declared her support for her partner Alves as he made his statement against the allegations.
