COLUMBIA The City of Columbia held its 2023 Columbia Values ​​Diversity Celebration Thursday morning. This event has been a part of Columbia history since its first celebration in 1994, with breakfast provided.

Admission tickets to the celebration have sold out, according to the City of Columbia’s website. He also said a keynote address would be given by keynote speaker Renee Montgomery and there would be entertainment provided by Nclusion+. This entertainment was a drag show. WE Project posted a video of one of the performances.

Among the group of attendees were middle school students from Columbia Public Schools on field trips.

After the celebration, some parents posted comments in a Facebook group, “CoMo Citizens for CPS Accountability and Transparency”, explaining that they had not been informed that their child would be watching a drag show.

Some parents said CPS did not communicate with them about the drag show.

Sen. Caleb Rowden (R-Columbia) posted on his official Twitter account and said he has received calls and emails to his office from CPS parents expressing their concerns.

Following the event, Columbia Mayor Barbara Buffaloe posted a thread on her official Twitter account thanking the group that planned it, along with a photo of herself with drags queens that occurred.

KOMU 8 News reached out to the school district, Buffaloe and Rowden for comment, but did not receive a response.
