Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has defended the decision to sign Leandro Trossard in light of questions over his age and professionalism.

Trossard completed his £21million move from Brighton to the Emirates on Friday and could well make his debut in Sunday’s clash against Manchester United.

It’s no secret that the winger/attacking midfielder wasn’t Arsenal’s first choice, having chased Mykhailo Mudryk for a time before Chelsea hijacked the Ukraine international’s transfer.

At 22, Mudryk was the perfect fit for the Gunners’ current transfer policy of signing young players with the potential to become world-class stars.

Bringing in Trossard, 28, would appear to be the opposite of what Arteta and Edu were looking to do in north London, and fans haven’t greeted the news as enthusiastically as previous signings.

In fact, the last player over 25 to sign for Arsenal was Thomas Partey in the summer of 2020.

But Arteta is sure Trossard will be a perfect fit for his team and addressed the transfer policy change in his pre-match press conference, saying: It’s very simple. The workforce can already absorb a 28-year-old player.

With the right experience, the right versatility and the right quality. And also with the right price, for sure. And we had no questions about it.

It’s not that we have to sign 20, 21, 22 year olds for the next five years. That’s not the plan. We have to have a balance and at the moment we have a very good balance in the team, it can absorb a player of this age.

Questions have also been raised about the professionalism of the Trossards due to the acrimonious manner in which he left Brighton, and how they could potentially damage the good nature of the Arsenal dressing room that Arteta has spent the past few years organizing with. care.

It is reported that the Belgium international recently fell out with a team-mate, potentially Adam Lallana, as he tried to force an Amex departure.

Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi subsequently banned him from training and as a result he missed several big games for the club, including the 3-0 win over Liverpool.

Arteta is confident that these problems will not be repeated, adding: We are very confident that we are signing the right person and the right player.
