Radeon GPU cracking is not caused by drivers, storage conditions and cryptomining to blame

KrisFix provides an update on an unusual increase in Radeon RX 6000 GPU failures at their repair center.

In the latest video from the German GPU repair service, a sudden spike in Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards was reported. There was nothing out of the ordinary about these cards that would explain why they were all failing after only a few days of purchase. That’s why Kris made the first video to learn more about the community.

After a short survey of affected customers, KrisFix determined that it was probably not the type of workload that was breaking the cards, as each customer used the card differently. However, what they had in common was the drivers. Each of the cards used the same latest version available at the time.

Long story short, it wasn’t the driver after all. It turns out that the graphics cards sent to KrisFix also had another thing in common that hadn’t been mentioned before. Many of these cards were sold by the same seller, with strong suspicion that these cards were previously used for cryptomining.

However, the main problem was not the fact that they were used for mining, as many post-mining maps are used daily by players around the world. It is the humidity in which these cards were stored that may have been the cause of the problem. Prolonged storage of graphics cards in a very humid warehouse is a very plausible explanation for GPU cracking.

Such findings were shared after running 150 hours of testing with multiple boards including AMD MBA (Made by AMD) and custom designs. These tests didn’t yield many answers, but a more detailed customer survey certainly did.

The video is quite long, but it shows the complete process of finding the potential cause. The test method and steps are presented in detail. That said, this should be a very educational video for many GPU enthusiasts, no matter what has been uncovered.
