Joey Bosa’s helmet throw helped the Chargers collapse in Jacksonville in last Saturday’s Super Wild Card Weekend playoff game. The loss didn’t end there for Bosa, who was fined $55,546 by the NFL for his criticism of officials following the Chargers’ 31-30 loss after leading 27-0.
Bosa’s helmet flip was the result of officials feeling that they had missed a false start on the Jaguars’ touchdown that cut the deficit to 30-26. Bosa walked to the sideline and threw his helmet, causing a second unsportsmanlike penalty that led to Jacksonville attempting a two-point conversion. With the line of scrimmage on the one-yard line due to the penalty, Trevor Lawrence was able to get the ball over the goal line to bring his team within two points.
After the loss, Bosa didn’t hold back his feelings about the officials, saying (via ESPN), “I’m sick of these fucking people.”
“I’m sure I already have fines coming,” Bosa said, sounding not to say too much. However, the approach quickly changed.
“I really, really want to say some things,” Bosa continued (via ESPN). “I have to be more responsible for my actions, obviously, but it’s a heated game and I’m in pain there, I’m playing on half a leg, I’m getting dragged to the ground, whatever, it could do me wrong. with our team, and yeah, maybe some of them weren’t as egregious as I thought, but I don’t know. I think there just needs to be more accountability. I want say, if I tell them something, I get fined $40,000, but if they miss a call that ruins an entire team’s season, they’ll come — they’ll probably be back in the locker room after the game like , ‘Haha, I got that hole, oh yeah, I got it. 15 yards what a loser.'”
Controversial calls have always been a big topic in the league, and when the stakes are raised, so are the emotions and criticisms on the calls. The team should have done more not to be able to make a call-up mean so much, and Bosa admitted that after the loss.
“We lost because we ruined everything in the second half. It’s quite simple.”
The play Bosa was fuming turned into Lawrence’s fourth touchdown of the game, after throwing four interceptions in the first half.
After forcing a three-and-out, the Jaguars then walked downfield and threw a 36-yard field goal to win the game and advance to the divisional round. They will face the No. 1-seeded Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday. The game will mark the Jaguars’ first divisional appearance since 2017.
Meanwhile, the Chargers are left with a heartbreaking loss and questions about the future of head coach Brandon Staley, who has been heavily criticized at times throughout the season.
