BCCI’s announcement of India’s 17-member squad for the first two Tests against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar series has fans, pundits and cricket veterans furious over Sarfaraz Khan’s absence while the logic behind Suryakumar Yadav’s selection in the format has been questioned. On Sunday, Sarfaraz, who shares a locker room with Suryakumar from the Mumbai nationals, ended his silence amid continued criticism of the selectors’ call into India’s batting star.
What left fans agitated was Sarfaraz’s plethora of runs in the Ranji Trophy compared to Suryakumar’s lack of appearances in red-ball cricket. The 25-year-old scored 928 runs at 154.66 in the 2019/20 season, 982 runs at 122.75 in the 2021/22 season and over 500 runs in the current season at an average of 92. Suryakumar, on the other hand, hasn’t played a red ball game in the past three years until appearing in a Ranji Trophy match last December where he scored an 80-ball 90.

Asked about Suryakumar’s selection, by journalist Vimal Kimar, and whether he found it inspiring given the time he had to wait for his Indian cap, Sarfaraz revealed that they share a good bond and that he learns a lot from his friend. .
Clearly, it does (his selection being inspiring). Suryakumar is a good friend of mine. And we spend a lot of time together when we’re on the team together. I learn a lot of things from him. He had to wait a long time but the way he played, he got his experience together, so that makes it easier, he said.
Last week, in an interview with The Times of India, Sarfaraz talked about his first reaction to the team announcement.
When the team was announced and my name was not there, I was very sad. Anyone in my place in this world would have been sad, because I expected to be chosen, but I was not (chosen). I was sad all day yesterday when we traveled from Guwahati to Delhi. I thought about what and why it had happened. I felt very alone. I cried too, he had said.
