The Prime Minister should not blame the justice system or attack its sentencing policy, let alone exert undue pressure on it in these particularly trying times, said Nationalist MP Adrian Delia.
Delia was referring to comments made by Abela on Monday. The prime minister praised the police for their actions, but urged the courts to bring a sense of security back into the country.
Abela says some judgments are too light for the offense. “I think the courts need to review their sentencing policies, review previous convictions and balance some sentences.”
In a Facebook comment, the former opposition leader said the Prime Minister should not blame the judiciary. This is both because they are prohibited from responding or commenting in public and because this is judicial interference constituting an attack on their autonomy and independence.
If the Prime Minister really wants to see a tougher impact on the crimes administered by our courts, what he should do is set up a law reform committee to review and amend the Criminal Code and legislate tougher sentences, Delia said.
When a Prime Minister pronounces the failure of security and safety in his own country under his own watch, the first thing that can be expected is the tendering of the resignation of the Home Secretary. Of course, in Malta this will not happen. It is therefore only a political gesture and a disempowerment. Sad but even worse dangerous, Delia said.
The particular reference here was to what Abela said about her fear of allowing her daughter to be alone in Valletta.
This leaves citizens in disarray, Delia said. It spreads fear and anxiety when it not only highlights a massive breakdown in societal discipline, but offers no solution. Where do people seek protection then? How will they seek to leave in peace and quiet? Who will guarantee their well-being?
This does not bode well for our country. We are on a slippery slope and it is safe to conclude that those who created this chaos certainly cannot be the ones who solve it, Delia said.
