Does the left come for your van? Critics say there’s a growing movement to tell Americans how to live

Ford pickup trucks have been an American classic for nearly 50 years, but some liberal critics say the love affair should end as they get bigger, bulkier and more dangerous.

A new Axios report has revealed that small pickup trucks have all but disappeared from the market to keep up with changing lifestyles and Americans’ obsession with bigger and better.

Still, some experts say the pushing of oversized trucks creates a greater risk to pedestrians and other drivers – who aren’t often seen in blind spots – because of the height at which the trucks sit. Gas guzzlers are also a growing concern as companies try to switch from fossil fuels to electric vehicles.

Fox News contributor Mollie Hemingway said “it’s no surprise” the left wants to take the trucks down.

“America was built on trucks. I mean, it was the trucks [that] helped build everything that matters in this country,” Hemingway explained Tuesday in “Outnumbered.”

“[The left] doesn’t like people controlling their own lives. And there is this growing authoritarian impulse on the left that needs to be stopped. But you pray that people care enough to resist it.”

Co-host Emily Compagno argued that the larger image of Axios was that trucks are nothing more than status symbols.

“They explained that the number of beds compared to taxi drivers is not as high as before, and that it is only poor people who circulate on the streets of the city. [But] you know, when I worked on a ranch in Montana and there were big fires, that’s how the horses were moved. This is how cattle were moved. And I can’t imagine a Prius coming over there with a 24-horsepower trailer and evacuating them to safety. I just don’t see it,” she said.

Washington Post columnist Marc Thiessen agrees, noting that the left is “an authoritarian movement that wants to tell you how to live your life.”

“Most conservatives say, listen, if you want to have your electric stove and your electric car, go ahead and live your life, wake up, have fun. And maybe if you do them well enough and enough cheap, one day I’ll buy one too. But it’s not good enough for the left,” Thiessen explained.

“They don’t want you to live your life. They want to tell you how to live your life. We’re going to say no, you’re not going to drive a gas-guzzling truck. And no, you’re not going to have a gas stove. You’re going to have an electric stove because every building, new building in New York can’t have gas anymore.

“Nothing is safe from the overly critical eyes of the left,” Compagno said.
