Arsenal’s dominance in the Premier League continues.
The Premier League’s youngest side are now five points clear of Manchester City after playing one less game. Despite a rocky start to Arteta’s early years at the club, the Gunners are on course for a 100-point season. Arteta’s success is nothing short of shocking, but opposition pundits and fans are focusing on something completely different: his conduct on the touchline.
Mikel Arteta is under scrutiny as Arsenal’s dominance continues

The Arsenal manager has always shown passion on the touchline. Arsenal fans often see the Spaniard cheering, shouting and waving at his players. For fans over a certain age, this show can only be seen as refreshing. Arsene Wenger, Arsenal’s greatest manager of all time, has rarely displayed such emotion and such passion throughout a 90-minute game.
Criticism of Arteta’s conduct appears to stem from Newcastle’s stalemate at the Emirates, in which Eddie Howe’s side appeared to lose time from the first minute. The two coaches were embroiled in a verbal row which caught the attention of the stadium, broadcasters and home fans. After the match, Arteta described as “scandalous” the two penalty decisions that were taken against his team.
Since that frustrating 0-0 against the Magpies, Arteta has been under a magnifying glass. When Arsenal completed the double against Tottenham with a dominating 2-0 victory, goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was attacked by a Spurs fan. While the rational reaction would be to condemn said fan’s behavior, pundit Richard Keys blamed Arteta.
The beIN Sports presenter said Arteta “is the one most to blame for the inflammatory behavior from the touchline that is pissing people off”.
Arteta’s next test would be to welcome in-form Manchester United to the Emirates. The game was a back-and-forth affair that ended with an emphatic winner from Eddie Nketiah in the 90th minute. However, once again one of the most highlighted elements was that Arteta was shown a yellow card for complaining about Luke Shaw’s conduct in the game. The Arsenal manager was seen showing four fingers to officials, indicating as many missed calls.
Gary Neville, who in recent seasons has publicly acknowledged the dislike he receives from Arsenal fans, continues to fan the flames. Commenting on Sky Sports, Neville said “[Arteta] the charges go up the touchline like a madman”.
“If he didn’t, you’d call him boring!” »
“We grew up watching Jose sprint on the touchlines, Klopp on the pitch. We like it!”

Despite the many criticisms the Arsenal manager has faced, there are those who have shown their support for Arteta’s passion and enthusiasm. While speaking on talkSport, Laura Woods spoke about all managers losing their temper at times, referring to Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola by name. Woods also said she believes recent criticism stems from Arsena’s continued dominance at the top of the Premier League.
Woods added: “We’re always talking about players having to become these robots, don’t make managers do that too.”
While one imagines Arteta would appreciate the efforts of those like Woods, the manager was asked straight about his yellow card following the Manchester United win.
In response to the question: ‘Can you complain about the yellow card you received?’, Arteta replied: ‘I don’t think… you can always improve in life.
If you’re wondering if Arsenal fans care about the noise surrounding Arteta’s conduct on the touchline, I’m not sure they can hear it on every win.
