NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI A North Kingstown Public Schools middle school teacher will avoid being fired after agreeing to quit at the end of the school year, following accusations he harassed a pre-teen girl.

The college teacher, whose identity has not been released, has agreed to remain on paid leave until the end of the school year and will not return to classroom duties or return to training, said said Michael Waterman, district chief operating officer, in a statement. .

“The independent investigator has found that none of the allegations against the teacher or the school department rise to the level of a Title IX violation,” Waterman said.

Attorney Matthew Oliverio led the investigation.

On Friday, the family’s attorney, Timothy Conlon, released a statement saying the family had not been sufficiently informed of developments or actions following the investigation.

“We are learning this not because of notification to the family involved, but through secret sources,” Conlon said in a statement.

Conlon also asked if anything would be done to create official records showing complaints against the teacher so other districts are aware before hiring them. Conlon raised concern as he also represents a group of former students who have accused former North Kingstown High School basketball coach Aaron Thomas of inappropriately touching students in the scandal. “bare fat test”.

Following Thomas’s resignation in June 2021, he was hired at a nearby Catholic school, where school officials said they were unaware of the allegations against Thomas. Thomas has since been charged with pedophilia and sexual assault.

“What if something was done to create a formal record so that subsequent potential employers would be made aware of the facts and circumstances surrounding the investigation?” Conlon said. “We have an example of a teacher who was investigated who resigned from the NKSD and got a position in another system later. Does the NKSD intend to do something differently ?”
