Change grip
Despite fears of an impending recession, luxury travel has been very strong. However, luxury subscription brand Inspirato has downsized its workforce and lowered its full-year guidance, apparently hiding deeper issues within the business behind a veil of macroeconomic uncertainty.

Inspirato, the luxury hotel subscription brand, cited continued macroeconomic uncertainty as it made staff cuts and trimmed its financial outlook for 2022, but that’s at odds with bullish comments from other agencies. travel, especially as regions like Asia reopen for international travel.
That suggests deeper issues at Inspirato, a company that went public in February 2022 via a merger of special purpose acquisition companies, and saw its stock price soar from $10 to $55 in a week. This induced a short squeeze, and Inspirato is now trading at just $1.30 per share, with the stock having fallen more than 70% in the past six months.
Inspirato has not been immune to investor fears of a looming recession as many hospitality and travel companies have seen their stock prices impacted in 2022. While major hotels and online travel agencies such as Hilton, Hyatt and Expedia are seeing a stock market rally in recent weeks, up 10-30% year-to-date due to lower inflation rates and strong demand, Inspirato has made workforce reductions and reduced its revenue and EBITDA guidance for 2022.
An outlier in the luxury segment
While Inspirato cites this on continued macroeconomic uncertainty, other travel companies see the luxury segment, especially hotel chains, leading the recovery. This suggests Inspirato-specific issues.
Founded in 2010, Inspirato is currently unprofitable. It aims to generate $340 million in revenue in 2022, with an adjusted EBITDA loss of $35 million. This is a downward revision to management’s guidance given earlier in the year of $350-360 million in revenue and a loss of EBITDA in the range of 25 to 15 million dollars.
Notably, management’s forecast for second quarter results in August included the statement that the company expects to generate positive adjusted EBITDA for the full year 2023. However, the company has excluded this measure of profitability from its third quarter earnings report in December, although co-founder and CEO Brent Handler said on the conference call that the company’s goal is to return to positive Adjusted EBITDA and (we) expect to reach more than $400 million in revenue for the year 2023.
Overrated, that’s for sure
Given the stock’s trading lows and recent 12% reduction in its workforce, Inspirato’s management is clearly taking desperate measures to hold down costs and prevent further deterioration in the EBITDA consensus and stock price. of action.
We also note that Inspirato is currently overvalued on a year-ahead enterprise value/EBITDA basis. Inspirato is trading at more than triple the multiple of its online travel peers.
Interestingly, Inspirato blames macroeconomic uncertainty as the primary reason for downsizing its workforce despite the CEO saying on the Q3 call that we have significant visibility on our timeline. prospective. And we’re looking at that and seeing a pretty robust level of booking activity at very high rates, higher than what we would have otherwise anticipated.
Demand also seemed strong with an 81% occupancy rate for the third quarter, well above what major hotels and online travel agencies reported. Inspirato saw 26% year-over-year growth in room nights for this period, and active subscriptions grew 16% year-over-year, above the rate for the year previous.

Inspirato positions itself as a luxury subscription brand, offering affluent travelers exclusive access to 5-star hotels and resorts. Elsewhere, the luxury sector, in particular, remains highly resilient in the face of recession, with companies like Hyatt, Marriott and Accor leaning more towards expanding their luxury portfolios.
Inspirato, however, seems to be struggling to appease the market.
I think it’s clear this is a company that should never have gone public, said an investor who bought shares. They are too small, too fragile and have too high a valuation.
The investor pitted the Inspiratos condition against the luxury segment.
In theory, they should be on fire, right?, said the investor. High-end luxury hotel macro trends are very much in vogue. The 1% do not feel the crisis and do not care. It is their bread and butter. I don’t know why they can’t seem to run.
Hiding deeper issues behind a weak history of macroeconomic fears is certainly not the path to clear communication with stakeholders. We believe Inspiratos should focus on maintaining its cost structure and leveraging its existing portfolio rather than expanding into new verticals, as the company recently did with the launch of Inspirato For Business and Inspirato For Good.
During the third quarter phone call, management noted that expanding into these two products had long-term benefits, such as lower customer acquisition costs for the base subscription product. However, with the transfer of a third of its sales force and marketing staff to these expanded segments, the question arises: how much additional investment will be invested in the development of the new segments and what will be the impact on the net profit ?
This strategy seems at odds with the company’s primary goal of breaking even EBITDA in 2023.
As luxury demand, particularly from Asia, continues its strong ascent in 2023, there are fears that Inspirato may not be able to take advantage of it, held back by its struggling finances and inflated valuation relative to its peers.
