PENDER COUNTY, North Carolina (WWAY) – Pender County Commissioner Jimmy Tate is speaking out against allegations that he does not live in the county.
Tate says a lawsuit has been filed claiming he does not maintain a permanent residence in Pender County.
Tate’s statement states, in part, that the allegations “are false and nothing more than a coordinated smear campaign against me. In the 2022 election, I rebutted claims that I did not live in Pender County and responded to those claims with documents.
Tate goes on to say that he cannot comment directly, as the lawsuit is not an individual trial but a Board of Commissioners matter.
The latest developments were spurred into action after a Hampstead woman, Beth Butler, called for Tate’s resignation due to the lawsuit at the Pender County Commissioner’s meeting on January 17.
“I am also a concerned citizen and other concerned citizens in the county are questioning Mr. Tate’s residency, as we have for the past year,” Butler said. “Mr. Tate was renting a trailer during the election at a trailer park in Surf City. This trailer park has since been sold and is scheduled to be demolished. representation in their district wanting to know, “Where does Mr. Tate live, because no one in our district has seen or heard from him since the election!” So I ask you, as a board, to directly investigate on Mr. Tate’s residence for transparency.
In a separate email to WWAY, Tate notes that the allegations stem from last year’s Republican primary election, saying “primary candidates and their teams who lose should accept it and move on.”
