Popular store hits back at criticism of self-checkout, says it’s trying to improve customer experience

HY-VEE shoppers will have to pack their own groceries as the major chain has announced it is rolling out self-service payment stations.

Not all shoppers are happy with the change, which the company hoped would improve the customer experience at an Iowa location.

The news comes at a time when many retailers are turning to self-checkout and contactless payment to improve efficiency and reduce labor costs.

The Midwestern supermarket chain has been slowly integrating self-service stations over the past few years.

A WeAreIowa reporter acknowledged that Hy-Vee’s recent announcement sparked debate.

“So the team has seen a lot of discussion about it on social media,” she said.

Fortunately, buyers always have the option of getting help from the staff.

“If you prefer to pay with an employee, that remains a choice,” added the journalist.

In a statement, a Hy-Vee spokesperson said, “As a company, Hy-Vee is always looking for innovative ways to improve the customer experience in our stores.”

The company added that the introduction of self-service payment terminals will not affect staffing or cut jobs.

Hy-Vee is not the first department store to move towards self-service. Target, Walmart, and Dollar General are among the many large chains that require customers to manage their checkout.

In addition to further empowering customers, self-checkouts have also received backlash for enabling shoplifting and other scanning incidents.

Hy-Vee did not immediately respond to the US Sun’s request for comment.
