Broadcaster Stan has pulled a TV sketch filmed at the Australian Open in which Wallabies players had to aim at a moving digital image of rugby referee Mathieu Raynal with tennis balls.
Raynal broke Australian hearts with a late call for Wallabies fly-half Foley in last year’s Rugby Championship 39-37 loss to Melbourne.
Raynal penalized Foley for delaying the game as the five-eighth was in fine form to kick the ball with less than two minutes left and the Wallabies were leading. In the game that followed, the All Blacks found their man in Barrett, who hit the ground. in the 81st minute to leave the Wallabies broken.
Rugby Australia ended up writing to World Rugby expressing concern over the refereeing given the late appeal and, what they considered a questionable waste of time.
The controversy resurfaced on Australian television, with Stan being criticized for asking Nic White and Ned Hannigan to throw tennis balls at the official as part of a lighthearted game show-style skit.
French rugby journalist Gauthier Baudin wrote on Twitter, along with a video of the skit: During a tennis match for Australian channel Stan Sport, Nic White and Ned Hanigan, Australian internationals, took aim at the French referee Matthieu Raynal. Stan Sports’ tweet was deleted after much criticism.
The video posted by Jared Wright on Twitter:

The clip has apparently come under heavy criticism for implying that rugby referees should be targeted.
The subject of how rugby union referees are treated has been a touchy subject lately in light of videos released by South African coach Rassie Erasmus in 2021, in which he criticized referee Nic Berry during of the 2021 British and Irish Lions tour. Erasmus accused Berry of being biased towards the Lions in the first test and of making several incorrect decisions during the game. The videos sparked debate among rugby fans and analysts, with some backing Erasmus’ criticism of Berry’s performance, while others criticized him for publicly criticizing a referee.
The incident has drawn attention to the issue of how referees are treated in sport and the impact criticism can have on their personal lives due to the abuse they face on social media.
