Nagpur: A four-member Vishakha committee appointed by the transport commissioner’s office on Saturday opened an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment by a female motor vehicle inspector against a senior transport department official. On January 16, a female MVI delegate to the Nagpur city RTO had filed a complaint against the officiating city RTO Ravindra Bhuyar with the transport departments head office in Mumbai. Earlier, the Transportation Commissioners Office had ordered the City RTO Women’s Grievance Redress Committee to investigate the complaint. Fearing that the local committee might have difficulty in taking action against a senior official, he referred the complaint to the state-level Vishakha committee consisting of RTO Vice Chairman (Washi) Hemangini Patil, Deputy Officiating Member RTO ( Kolhapur) Deepak Patil, Member Secretary and Motor Vehicle Procurator (Pune RTO) Sharda Wadekar and a non-governmental member from Nagpur. employees of regional transport offices in the city, east and countryside of Nagpur. The hearing began at 11 a.m. and continued until late in the evening. The panel first took the complainant’s statement. The complainant had mentioned that Bhuyar not only used abusive language and repeated obscenities against her in public, but he also forced her to sit at the desk for hours even when there was no work. On top of that, he had a habit of making objectionable statements that denigrated his character, the complainant said. According to the officials’ complaint, Bhuyar used to threaten to implicate him in a corruption case. The panel also took Bhuyar’s statement. After completing its investigation, the Vishakha Committee will submit its report to the TC office. Bhuyar’s fate will be decided based on the investigation report.
