Predictably, Democrats turned the death of Tire Nichols in Memphis, Tennessee, into a referendum on Republicans and the country in the form of systemic racism. After all, it is better to talk about it than that it is yet another failure of local and national Democratic politicians.
The liberal pundit industry is awash with cries of systemic racism over why Nichols, who is black, was beaten to death by five police officers. Of course, it doesn’t matter that all five officers are also black. To them, the five were puppets of institutional white supremacy, these pundits and activists would have you believe, as are all black people who have ever harmed other black people.
Van Jones on CNN is currently talking about how “self-hatred” in some black people, the kind that would make a black cop kill a black victim, is due to white supremacy. I can’t win, FOLX

MEMPHIS POLICE DISSOLVE STREET CRIMES UNIT WHOSE OFFICERS BEATEN TIRE NICHOLS
The fact that Democrats have run Memphis for at least 31 years is not mentioned in these screeds and the new police department fundraising campaign. As is always the case, Democrats do not want to talk about the death of a black man at the hands of police in a city they have hegemonically controlled for decades. After the police killing of George Floyd, Democrats also sought to avoid the fact that they had controlled Minneapolis since 1978. That’s nothing new.
But there’s a new element at play. MSNBC’s Paul Butler claimed that congressional Republicans blocked legislation that would have (one way or another) stopped five black police officers from beating a man to death. Somewhat less outrageously, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) said the senses. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Tim Scott (R-SC) should try to revive police reform efforts as if the issue were more of a bipartisan failure. .
But this failure is not bipartisan. It shouldn’t be necessary for Scott to restart police reform negotiations because he proposed a police reform bill in the summer of 2020 after Floyd’s death. Democrats, not Republicans, blocked the bill, deciding they’d rather have no police reform bill than one they thought didn’t go far enough. In reality, Democrats wanted to use the bill as a political talking point ahead of the 2020 election.

Then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Republicans were trying to get away with murdering George Floyd, but oh, don’t worry, those negotiations will surely work out this time.
The fact is, Nichols’ death has about as little to do with Republicans as anything that happened in America that day. It has nothing to do with systemic racism either. To the extent that there is any blame to be assigned outside of the five officers who actually assaulted Nichols, it would be the Democrats who have run the city for decades and, to a lesser extent, the Democrats in Congress who used the reform of the police as a political tool the last time it was debated.
