Kenny Payne’s tumultuous first season as head coach of Louisville men’s basketball continued Saturday at Notre Dame, where the Fighting Irish led comfortably throughout with a 76-62 win. Notre Dame (10-12, 2-9 ACC) broke a four-game skid and sent the Payne Cardinals (2-19, 0-10) to their 10th straight loss as the ACC’s only winless team .
Notre Dame went 13-0 early in the competition and never looked back, earning just its second ACC victory in 11 tries this season. The Fighting Irish were effective offensively for the most part apart from a five-minute second-half drought and did not suffer their first turnover until 13 minutes from time.
The Cardinals went 14-0 in the second half, but that barely cut Notre Dame’s lead, which grew to 29 at one point. Notre Dame had lost three double-digit leads this season, but Mike Brey’s team didn’t let that happen again.
