Argus readers don’t criticize parking in Newport

CAR PARKING is an oft-discussed topic in Newport – with the subject of ire many Argus readers directed at the difference between the town and free parking in Cwmbran.

With that in mind, we asked for your opinion on the worst places to park your car in town.

Besides comparisons with Cwmbran, here are some of your answers.

Stephen Metcalfe said the Kingsway car park in central Newport had an “awful layout”.

He noted the “very tight gaps and turns on the ramp”.

“You can see where the cars cut the walls,” he said.

Karina Isles called the parking lot at the Royal Gwent Hospital “atrocious”.

“Especially for the disabled who cannot walk distances,” she said.

“It’s definitely time they fixed this.”

Paul Duddridge voted for all the parking lots in all of Newport.

“A town charges for parking, which hurts the town center shops,” he said, noting that “people go to Cwmbran because parking is free and the town center thrives.”

Ian Cooling also mentioned the “shocking” layout of the Kingsway car park.

“The Friars Walk car park also has an awful layout, is too small to serve the mall with the entrance much too close to what is, in effect, a two-lane road,” he said.

Marie Wheeler didn’t flinch in her description of the state of parking in the city.

She said: “Almost all of them are dirty, stinky and should be free due to the deplorable state of the half-empty town.

“The Stow Hill private car park opposite the burnt church is unsafe and dodgy.

“Uneven tarmac, potholes, no decent lighting, price going up every few months.”

Meanwhile

Andrew Turner voted for South Wales Arguscar Park.

“No journalist uses it,” he said.

Mr. Turner is of course right. No journalist has used the Argus car park since it was sold to developers ten years ago, before being turned into a housing estate.
