Welcome to English Media, Mykhaylo Mudryk. Remember that TikTok video you made in a foreign language last year…
There are only two occasions when footballers appear on the front page of The Sun.
And since Mykhaylo Mudryk isn’t an English footballer wrapped in a St. George’s flag before a major tournament game, we know straight away he’s been a bad boy.
Now you could say there are rather bigger things going on in England right now – with the UK being the only major economy set to contract in 2023 after the sun-backed Tories completely screwed us , being one – but according to The Sun, the biggest news right now is that a footballer uttered the N-word last year.
We have some issues with this. The first is that Mudryk is not an ’88m Chelsea star’, he is an 62m Chelsea signing. The second is that it’s completely irrelevant how much it cost, because the whole story is basically this: a 21-year-old born and raised in Ukraine for whom English is not his native tongue once made a TikTok video in which he rapped and repeated a lyric that shouldn’t be rapped and repeated by white people.
And that’s all.
On the front page of tomorrow: Chelsea soccer star Mykhailo Mudryk has been slammed after using the N-word in a music video for fanshttps://t.co/Ysc3LeACzV pic.twitter.com/zolqGv6OUn
The Sun (@TheSun) January 30, 2023
It’s not very handsome but he’s an Eastern European boy who loves rap. It’s not like he’s the captain of Chelsea saying the words “f***ing black c***” on a football pitch to a fellow professional.
And it’s also pretty significant that Mudryk apologized and took down the video. Curiously, this is not mentioned on the front page of The Sun.
But as we found out online, Mudryks’ rep told The Sun:
“Mykhailo is deeply sorry for any offense caused by the video posted to his TikTok account last July. While his intention was only to recite the lyrics of a song, Mykhailo regrets his decision and wholeheartedly accepts that it was not appropriate. The video has since been deleted.
The paper claims ‘EXCLUSIVE’ on the ‘FURY ABOUT ACE’ before saying Mudryk was ‘slammed’ and ‘lambasted’ by activists, but that’s the full statement from Kick It Out:
“Kick It Out condemns the use of all racial slurs, including the N-word, in any context.
“The N-word is deeply offensive and the use of this term by football personalities can only serve to drive people away from the game.
“It is important that footballers use their important platform in a positive way, and have been heartened to see that Mykhailo Mudryk has acknowledged the harm caused by his use of this attacking insult.”
Not a slam. Not an “explosion”. Just a measured statement that acknowledges that Mudryk has apologized. Which is more than The Sun manages on a ridiculous front page designed purely to entertain.
And no, it’s not a “racist video”; it’s a video in which a young man raps a lyric that contains a racial slur. There is a huge difference.
Viva Las VegasThe media’s obsession with misbehaving footballers is how we get here…
“Man Utd in Las Vegas for the first time as Erik ten Hag wants to test discipline” – Daily Star.
“Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag to test team discipline with luxury trip to Las Vegas” – Express.
“Man Utd set to travel to Las Vegas for the first time on their summer tour so Erik ten Hag can test star discipline” – The Sun.
They’re not going to have a bloody bachelor party.
