The Super Mario Bros movie has already been released in theaters and is receiving mixed reactions from audiences. The film already faced backlash when it was announced that Chris Pratt would voice Mario. As some were eagerly waiting for an Italian actor to give the character a voice. But still, Pratt ended up getting the role and he’s already addressed the backlash situation.

Before this movie, in 1993, a Super Mario Bros movie was released and the Italian plumber was played by Bob Hoskins. A cast member of this film declined to watch this new film due to lack of inclusion in the film.

John Leguizamo doesn’t want to watch the Super Mario Bros movie (LR) Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach and Keegan Michael Key as Toad in THE SUPER MARIO BROS. MOVIE

Many filmmakers are getting into making video game feature films these days. But back in the ’90s, Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel had already taken the plunge to make a video game adaptation of the fan-favorite Mario. The film was heavily panned by critics as well as audiences. In the film, the character of Luigi Mario was played by John Leguizamo who recently expressed his disinterest in watching the film.

According to Leguizamo, he won’t be watching the new Chris Pratt-directed movie. As he also thinks like some people that an Italian actor should have been cast.

“No, I won’t watch Super Mario Bros. They could have included a Latin character, like I was a revolutionary, then they stopped the revolution. They messed up the inclusion, they disincluded! I just kicked the folk Latin. We’re 20% of the population. The largest group of people of color, and we’re underrepresented. Overrepresented for the worst kinds of jobs, though.

Even though there are a lot of reviews around the film, it did well at the box office. Currently, the film is projecting $195 million at the record 5-day opening box office. It looks like the movie will continue to make money and won’t be affected by the controversies surrounding it.
