A newly formed Carlow group has launched an anti-racism pledge to reject attempts to scapegoat minorities or spread fear and violence
Carlow is an inclusive county and welcomes people fleeing war and violence, Carlow For All spokeswoman Rohana Perera said. The group’s pledge has been signed by various community organizations and local businesses, including SETU SU, Carlow College SU, Clean Carlow, Carlow SETU Teachers Union of Ireland, Elderflower Group and local school principal Simon Lewis.

Mr. Perera added: Social media is full of unsubstantiated allegations that seek to portray vulnerable people fleeing atrocities as dangerous. These demands come from a small but vocal minority and are used to stoke fear in communities and sow division. The facts tell a very different story, Ireland saw a 1.4% increase in the refugee population and yet there was no spike in crime. Additionally, any asylum seeker or refugee who enters the country goes through a very intense vetting process and even has their movements tracked while they live here. Fiction must be countered by reality.
He concluded: There are very serious social problems in Ireland, particularly with regard to housing and the lack of public facilities, but these problems existed long before the increase in the number of refugees entering Ireland. We need to ask the government to address these issues and not blame the most vulnerable. We would like to thank SETU SU, Carlow College SU, Clean Carlow, Carlow SETU Teachers Union of Ireland, The Elderflower Group, Simon Lewis, Local School Principal, Carlow Womens Refuge Campaign, local artists Clare Caron & Kate McMeekin, Rohingya Action Ireland and Maurice Joe OReilly, fromMade in Carlowfor signing the pledge.

WORDING OF COMMITMENT:
We, the undersigned, pledge to reject racism and all attempts to appeal to racist ideas and feelings.
In particular, we reject any attempt to target the Traveler community, migrants, refugees, asylum seekers or any minority group as scapegoats for housing, health and other issues. social. We recognize that the government must provide significant funding to improve access to housing and health care and that the blame for these social problems does not lie with the most vulnerable.
