Jon Rahm reveals reason for early Masters struggles; The NFL player is to blame

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Jon Rahm won his first Masters golf tournament on Sunday, rallying two strokes off entering the day to win by four strokes when he finished at under 12.

But his last round of 69 to 3 under par almost went wrong at the start of the tournament.

Rahm, the highest-ranked golfer in the world, opened his Masters week with a double bogey after hitting the opening hole of Thursday’s first round.

After winning on Sunday, however, Rahm revealed the reason for his rocky start to the tournament’s first hole.

For those who believe in the curse of other players or people or anything, Thursday morning as I rode my golf cart to this green — Ten minutes before my tee time, I saw a text from a good friend of mine, Rahm said. I’m going to name him because he’s a Super Bowl champion, Zach Ertz, he texted: That first green looking like a walk in the park, 10 minutes before I put four to start the tournament.

Just minutes after receiving this text, Rahm put four strokes on the first hole at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia.

So thank you Zach, please never do that again, Rahm said with a smile.

Ertz, an Arizona Cardinals tight end who previously helped the Philadelphia Eagles win Super Bowl LII in 2018, responded to Rahm via social media on Sunday night.

I apologize for absolutely nothing! You can expect these all great texts in the future my friend! Congratulations!, Ertz said in a Tweet.

Rahms’ first-place finish marks his second career major PGA Championship victory, as well as the 2021 US Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course in California.
