Ruud dismisses criticism of only winning small tournaments

Casper Ruud has been criticized for only winning ATP 250 tournaments but he dismissed that after winning the Estoril Open in 2023.

Being arrogant isn’t something you can really attribute to Ruud, but he won’t sit back and just criticize for nothing. The Norwegian recently admitted that his lineup this year wasn’t a very smart idea.

Yet he also dismissed the general criticism surrounding him as a player who had an easy path to where he is. Playing the ATP 250s isn’t something many great players do, but Ruud sees no problem with that. These are always events with a trophy and points as he proved again in Estoril.

People don’t write much about me. I think it’s also because I don’t have the flashiest game and the most beautiful winners, forehands, backhands, serves. But in the end, I win a lot of matches. The ranking is 52 weeks, last year I won many matches.

The Estoril triumph lifted him up to fourth in the standings and while it wasn’t a career high for him, it still shows how far he’s come in being very consistent. His best ranking was number two and he referenced it after the win.

I got to number two. People will always find a way to criticize no matter what. They will say the path was easy or that I play smaller tournaments. Maybe you can give credit to my clever planning.

He has also been very open about the self-doubt that arose with the poor results earlier this year. He’s human and naturally he’ll doubt himself too, but he’s found a way to ignore all of that and just be comfortable with who he is as a player. Victory at Estoril will certainly calm some of those doubts.
