The New York Red Bulls and their striker Dante Vanzeir apologized on Monday after the Belgian made a racist remark during a Major League Soccer game against the San Jose Earthquakes.

Play was halted for about 15 minutes as the San Jose players debated whether to continue with Saturday’s game before deciding to do so. The game ended 1-1 at Red Bull Arena.

San Jose forward Jeremy Ebobisse said a New York player used a racist epithet early in the second half, without naming the player.

Ebobisse said after the game that San Jose decided to continue after the player insisted he hadn’t directed the remark at a specific opponent.

MLS immediately launched an investigation and Vanzeir, the Red Bulls and their manager Gerhard Struber have now all apologized.

“I want to sincerely apologize to the Earthquakes players. I will do everything I can to be part of the change that needs to happen in this sport and in our world,” Vanzeir, 24, said in a statement.

“I also want to apologize to my teammates, the coaches, the organization and our fans. I made a mistake and I will take all the necessary steps to grow.

“I accept full responsibility for my actions. Although I had no intention of causing harm or offending my tongue, I know I did and I am deeply sorry.”

Also in a statement, the Red Bulls said they “wholeheartedly apologize for the unacceptable events that took place on Saturday evening”.

“Words and inaction were inexcusable, and we believe there is never room for that,” the team said.

Austrian Struber said he regretted not taking Vanzeir off the pitch immediately after the incident.

Vanzeir, who once played for his country and left Belgian football for the Red Bulls in February, said he would accept any suspension or fine from his club or MLS.
