Dodgers News: Dave Roberts responds to Mookie Betts self-criticism

[ad_1]

Dodgers superstar outfielder (and second baseman) Mookie Betts is off to a great start to the 2023 season. He started all 12 games for the Dodgers and cut .279 / .426 / .512 with two homers, four RBIs, 10 walks and a best NL of 11 points scored. He also played stellar defense in right field and at second base, showing his arm on a number of plays.

The D-backs could have had runners in the corners with no one and a fragile Brusdar Graterol to face the meat of the formation.

However, before that series against the Giants, Betts was asked about his start to the season and called it trashy and terrible. His manager, Dave Roberts, said that’s how Betts always rolls.

That’s typical Mookie, man, Roberts said. It’s like (longtime college football coach) Lou Holtz, where he’s always been the underdog, everyone’s better and he’s just going to try hard. Mookies are always trash. He knows he is the best player on the pitch every day.

As for his start to the season, Roberts has been pleased with what his superstar has done on the court.

I think he got off to a good start, Roberts said. Out of doors you just want to keep the service. If you can get out of doors then you can somehow find your place. What you don’t want to do is dig yourself a big hole and hunt all year round.

The Dodgers have had their fair share of players digging themselves into a hole, like Chris Taylor and Max Muncy. But Betts has been very solid at the top of the order and will only improve once he is on a good streak. So if Mookie wants to be tough on himself, so be it, but I think all Dodger fans can agree that he’s been far from trouble to open this 2023 campaign. If he has another equipment in him, however, I don’t think anyone would be mad to see.
