Users blame issues with latest Windows 11 update on AI. Here’s how to fix them.

Microsoft’s mission to infuse all of its products with AI could be accomplished at the expense of core functionality.

In late February, Microsoft announced an update to Windows 11 that would bring AI-powered Bing search right to the taskbar. Now, a mandatory security update installed on April 11 is said to cause delays and bugs in some of the fundamental features of the software.

Users in Reddit’s Windows 11 Community have reported slow SSD (solid state drive) speeds, broken or disappearing desktop icons, issues with the taskbar and task manager, and error messages related to Windows Update. It’s unclear if the new Bing taskbar is related to the issues, but users are frustrated that Windows released such a buggy update. “There are still so many bugs and inconsistencies to fix, and they think the best thing to do is to add an ad asking you to upgrade to a Microsoft account,” said a Redditor (Opens in a new tab) making refers to a new advertising feature in the Start Menu promoting Microsoft account and One Drive upgrades. “Never ever, Microsoft. NEVER. NEVER.”

The implication is that Microsoft may be a little distracted by launching new features when it should be focusing on keeping its operating system running smoothly. Despite an increasing number of users reporting bugs, the Build Health Dashboard (opens in a new tab) – a part of Microsoft’s website that monitors builds for things like bugs and whether they’ve been Resolved – did not update any known issues related to the April 11 update. The last known issue on the dashboard was on March 28.

How to fix these issues with the latest Windows 11 update

For now, the unofficial solution is to uninstall Windows 11 and wait for an update that fixes these issues. You can do this by accessing Windows Update from the Start menu. From there, click on “View update history”, find the update called “KB5025239” and click on “Uninstall”.
