Jim Nantz is really bothered by the growing criticism of Tony Romo

After a critically acclaimed start to his career, Tony Romos’ broadcasting style has been derided over the past two years and his partner Jim Nantz thinks the hate is unwarranted.

Andrew Marchand reported that CBS executives tried to stage an intervention for the former Cowboys quarterback ahead of the 2022-23 season, hoping the Romo everyone once loved would return.

Instead, it received even more backlash from fans and the media.

During the preseason meeting with Romo, CBS Sports President Sean McManus and CBS Senior NFL Games Producer Jim Rikhoff said they want him and Nantz to team up better.

Nantz reflected on the relationship between him and Romo, stating that I’ve never had better chemistry with anyone in my career.

Tony is the best. It’s the absolute best. And he’s also one of my best friends. I like the guy. And when someone starts questioning our chemistry, there’s an agenda there, Nantz said. There’s nothing wrong with our chemistry.

Don’t expect everyone to be the same, by the way. Tony does it his way. I’m talking presentation and all. Tony has his way of watching a game. It’s funny. There is a magnetism with Tony. There is excitement. It’s true. Our friendship is real.

If you really want to watch it throughout the season, I think what audiences are saying about Tony speaks for itself. You build it based on what maybe some media watchers are saying and what Twitter is saying but all I ever hear is they love the team and they love Tony and that they were going to have a great season. I have so much respect for him and what he’s done and what he’s done to elevate the excitement of the NFL.

Despite Nantz’s support for his colleague, Romo will face intense scrutiny as we head into next season with the duo back on CBS’ top stand.

The pair will air next year’s Super Bowl in Las Vegas, and if things don’t get better by then, Romo could catch more flak than ever.
