You could put Sam Neill and Willem Dafoe together in a dirty bathroom stall with only a copy of “The Fountainhead” to read aloud, and these two would still create an engrossing cinematic experience. Fortunately, the Australian action movie “The Hunter” is better than that. Dafoe plays a mercenary named Martin, hired by a biotech company to find out if a thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, still exists on Australian island territory. If so, he must track him down and bring him for study.
Sam Neill is Jack, the nice neighbor, which means he’s probably suspicious. It is up to the viewer to decide their actual involvement in the events that occur. An often quiet action flick, Dafoe needs to keep audiences invested in its work, and, well, that’s Dafoe. Aided by the beautiful Tasmanian wilderness and a long pensive silence, it shines. Functionally Australian only on release, it’s not even a bombshell. It’s a blip; a curiosity worth seeking out for those looking to hunt for a new experience, one valuable to the rare few.
