Netflix releases so many series from week to week that it’s just not possible for every new release or even the vast majority of them to turn into a hit for the streaming giant. There’s too much content for them all to be a winner, compared to the more boutique and curated approach of a rival like HBO. Two of Netflix’s most recent series, meanwhile, have received particularly scathing reviews from critics, one of which is apparently so bad it earned itself a rare 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The two new series in question are the raunchy thriller Obsession and the crime drama Florida Man.

Obsession on Netflix
The former of these two, a 4-part limited adaptation of Josephine Hart’s short story, Damage, is the most widely streamed of the pair. It got terrible ratings for Rotten Tomatoes from critics and fans (43% and 21%, respectively). It gives us an overload of shlock, ominous string music and a few depressing, grumpy hits, a reviewer laments of the series, in which a British politicians’ affair with her son’s fiancé makes Fifty Shades feel like of grays meet Anatomy of a Scandal.
Adds another unimpressed reviewer: It’s about our lowest impulses overriding our circuits, driving us crazy. But at one point, Richard Armitage aggressively tries to have sex with a bed and starts crying, so it’s pretty hard to take seriously.
The second of two new Netflix series to meet with less than enthusiastic reception, meanwhile, is Florida Man, a detective series whose title plays with the real-world meme and comes from production company Jason Batemans.
Particularly interesting is the response to this series in which Edgar Ramirez plays struggling ex-cop Mike Valentine, a gambling addict who owes money to a Philadelphia mobster. As of this writing, it has a 0% review score on Rotten Tomatoes, but an 80% audience score on the review aggregation site. That’s quite a discrepancy, even though the 0% is based on five review takes at the moment (whereas the audience score is from over 50 users at the moment).
The story continues
Interestingly, these two new Netflix series have also been in the US Top 10 since Sunday (Obsession is No. 6, while Florida Man is No. 2 just behind Beef). This suggests, among other things, that the row of content inside the Netflix app titled Top 10 TV Shows in the US Today is more of a measure of novelty than anything else. That is: people see new shows coming to the app, and enough critical mass of subscribers then give them a try before, quite often, new releases continue to rack up scores and ratings. terrible ratings.
