Beloved children’s book author Judy Blume has said the recent internet mess surrounding her comments about JK Rowling is total bullshit.
It all started last weekend when Blume, 85, gave an interview to The Sunday Times. She was talking about her long career and the upcoming adaptation of her book, Are You There, God? It’s me, Margaret, with Rachel McAdams.
Journalist Hadley Freeman also asked Blume about fellow popular children’s book author JK Rowling, 57, who has become a controversial figure for her views on the transgender community, for which Rowling has received death threats.
I’m behind her 100% as I watch from afar, Blume said.
Fans on Twitter reacted with outrage.
I was REALLY disappointed. I was worried that one of my biggest childhood influences was a TERF, wrote one fan, using the acronym trans-exclusive radical feminist, which is a common term for people with Rowlings’ beliefs.

Of course Judy Blume is a terf because nothing can ever be good in this world

Another fan said, Ugh, waking up to find Judy Blume supporting Queen Terf isn’t a great start to the day.
However, Blume has since spoken out via a Twitter statement she posted on Sunday.
I fully support the trans community. My point, which has been taken out of context, is that I can sympathize with a writer or someone who has been bullied online. I support the trans community and vehemently disagree with anyone who does not fully support LGBTQIA+ equality and acceptance. Anything to the contrary is complete bullshit, Blume wrote.
Other fans defended Blume. Judy Blume is 85 and not chronically online like y’all and I don’t for a second think she’s a terf. It was literally a misunderstanding. Please stop, one wrote.
Rowling recently sparked controversy for her involvement in the new Harry Potter TV show for Max (formerly known as HBO Max).

Casey Bloys, president and CEO of HBO and Max Content, defended her involvement.
It’s a very online, very nuanced and complicated conversation and nothing was going to come in, he said. Our priority is what’s on screen. Obviously, the story of Harry Potter is incredibly affirming and positive and is about love and self-acceptance. It is our priority what is on the screen. [Rowling] will be involved. Shes an executive producer on the show. His ideas are going to be helpful in this regard.
No release date or cast has yet been announced for the Harry Potter TV series.
The film adaptation of Are You There God? This Is Me Margaret hits theaters April 28.
