In a tweet, Angkita said she even complained to Rahul Gandhi when she met him during the Bharat Jodo Yatra in Jammu, but no action has yet been taken against Srinivas.

Angkita became active in Congress after the death of her father in 2016. She became vice-president of the Assam Youth Congress (AYC) in June 2018 and was appointed president in November 2021 after the departure of Kamrul Islam Choudhury, president of the AYC. Angkita told TV stations that Srinivas abruptly decided to hold the AYC elections and did not give it importance during the Youth Congress activities in Assam.

“How can a sexist and chauvinistic leader @IYC torture and belittle a woman every time…?” she asked in another tweet.

“I’m a female leader. If I’m being harassed like this, how am I supposed to encourage women to join us?”

Srinivas’ rebuttal:

Rejecting her claims, the IYC Legal Cell served a legal notice asking Angkita to issue an apology on social media or Srinivas would file a criminal defamation suit against her. The legal notice was served on behalf of Srinivas, a ruler of Karnataka. He said Angkita failed to discharge its responsibilities competently and instead brought allegations against the IYC in charge of Assam as well.

“Srinivas BV is a well-known public figure, social worker and politician. He has gained a significant name and reputation through his impeccable public service, especially during the Covid-19 lockdown. But Dutta resorted to defamatory and malicious statements against Srinivas and totally sexist, chauvinistic, false and frivolous allegations,” the legal notice reads.

He further stated that Angkita’s name appeared in the Saradha chit fund scam and therefore she was making these allegations in an attempt to defame the image of Congress and join the BJP. The notice said she was also in constant contact with Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, who was in Congress until August 2015.

Bhupen Kumar Borah, Chairman of the Assam Pradesh Congressional Committee, said he would talk to Angkita to sort out the issue.
