Any attempt to sweep Professor Boateng’s allegations under the rug will not wash away John Jinapor

The senior member of parliament’s mines and energy committee said he would not allow claims by former environment minister Professor Frimpong Boateng that senior officials were engaging in illegal mining activities, be rejected.

According to him, the minority in Parliament will intensify and pursue the issue when Parliament resumes.

This, he said, is because the allegations of the Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Illegal Mining (IMCIM) set up by President Akufo-Addo are very serious.

He added that we cannot allow this level of impunity, this level of blatant disregard for our national laws to continue.

It’s unfortunate and any attempt to sweep it under the rug won’t wash away. This is a very serious matter, it tells you why we fail as a country to set limits…” he said in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story.

His comment comes after former environment minister Prof Frimpong Boateng submitted the names of people in government who frustrated his efforts to tackle what is locally known as galamsey.

In the just leaked 2021 Report to the President, Professor Boateng names senior government officials accused of active involvement in illegal mining.

According to him, the galamsey threat extends to the seat of government, Jubilee House.

Mr. Jinapor responded to the contents of the report by saying he was not surprised by the details.

He said he knew from reports that the president’s announcement to put his presidency on the line was not made in good faith.

He, however, expressed dismay at the extent of the rot and the level of complicity from the presidency.

According to him, the reports indicate that the commitment to fight galamsey is not there, it is just talk, it is rhetoric and that this government is not showing the ability, desire, will and seriousness to tackle it.

To get senior government officials involved in this whole galamsey threat, what are you going to say to the average Ghanaian? he questioned.
