Brake issue behind Dennis crash at Berlin E-Prix

Andretti Autosport driver Jake Dennis says a braking problem took him out of the Berlin E-Prix as the Antonio Felix da Costa Porsches were eliminated in the incident.

Dennis entered the Berlin double-header second in the Championship table despite not scoring a point since January.

The Briton qualified with a solid fifth place for the first of two races at the Tempelhof Airport street circuit this weekend and led at various points.

He was running sixth and attempting to pass Maximilian Gunthers’ Maserati MSG machine in front towards the left hairpin of Turn 6 when he lost control, collecting da Costa’s Porsche ahead of him.

After undergoing a system reset in the pits, Dennis joined and was seeded 18th after also picking up a time penalty for the collision which he said was due to a problem with the rear brakes.

Dennis was also unhappy with Gunthers’ actions when braking the corner as he believes the German moved too late to cover the line.

The rear brakes kicked in at the end when I was spun and obviously we have to see what caused the problem of not being able to stop me,” said Dennis.

The problem with Formula E is obviously that we lift so early, it’s not like any normal class where you can’t really move that much under braking because you’re already on the limit.

“In Formula E you drive for such a long time and then you brake, so you have the luxury of being able to move so much and I just felt like he was moving quite late.

I was already engaged, then I pressed the brake and obviously got the situation. We just need to analyze why this happened.

Da Costa was also knocked out in the collision after sustaining damage to his left front suspension, having climbed impressively from 19th on the grid to finish fourth.

The Portuguese driver feels that even though he has not yet activated his last attack mode, a good result was in store.

He said: We had an attack mode to take but the space would have been there for us to take it, potentially losing a place to Gunther, but we had more energy and pace than him anyway so to fourth hit, maybe a podium.

Considering we started on the 19th, it would have been a very solid day.
