SCLC president calls for commitment to end racism

Southern Christian Leadership Conference President Dr. Charles Steele Jr. said Saturday that Americans should financially commit to a determined campaign to educate citizens and end racism and discrimination in the country.

Steele made the remarks while addressing the black political caucus of the Alabama Democratic Conferences in Huntsville, Alabama. The campaign would cost $50 million according to Steele who likened the issue to fighting the abortion pill block.

Just as we take action to overturn judges’ decisions to block the abortion pill, we must see that same unity in eradicating racism and discrimination, Steele said. We cannot wait for the government to fix our problems. Politics has never liberated the people. The people liberated politics.

The educational workshops would be a tool used to hold discussions about race and the lingering impacts of Americas violence against black people. Steele said we couldn’t hide the fact that America is responsible for many atrocities around the world, including the transatlantic slave trade and the Holocaust.

Steele believes conversations like this will help heal the country.

This educational campaign will inspire America to address these transgressions and then you will see the change in our society, a reduction in poverty, crime, violence and despair.

Steele was invited to speak by the Huntsville and Madison County Democratic Conference in Alabama. The organization’s president, Eddie C. Sherrod, said they wanted to invite a national figure who could excite voters and inspire them to go to the polls in the 2024 election.

Steeles’ comments come a week after a divisive concepts bill was passed by an Alabama House committee. This bill would restrict the teaching of certain controversial concepts related to race, religion or gender and would criminalize teachers who violate the law.

The statements also coincide with Monday being Confederate Memorial Day. A commemoration of soldiers who died trying to protect slavery
